An engineered timber floor is a 100% timber flooring product, but with modern technology's benefits. Suppose you're after a true timber floor, but want the practicality of modern techniques. In that case, understanding what's possible in an engineered timber floor is a great place to start.
Put simply, an engineered timber floor has a top layer in your specified species, supported by plantation timber core materials. Depending on the floor, this core might be a different kind of hardwood or plywood. This means that you still get the timber you're after, with a much more stable structure.
One downfall of traditional solid flooring is that the grain goes in just one direction. The downside is that the timber is by temperature, humidity, and other environmental changes. However, engineered timbers are constructed into a sandwich of alternating grain directions, and a topping of thick veneer with your chosen wood and are therefore far more stable.
To protect the timber, engineered flooring is pre-finished and coated in the factory. Because of this, you will not need to complete further sanding and finishing during installation. At the same time, because they're natural wood, engineered timber floors still allow you to sand and refinish if the need arises. The outcome?
